The weekend's thrifting treasures. A wicker bed for the kitties, a brand new soft bath baby--vintage doll in the box, a little peasant top (and Julia whipped up a new skirt on the machine for her, to go with it). A wooden tool box, 3 board books, a wash board for the littlest loves, a vintage chair/stool, a bowl of fabric and felt strawberries, a vintage drying rack, a drainboard full of mason jars, a couple of vintage photographs, some vintage craft books, a clothesline full of hand made vintage aprons--13 of them for $3.00. A basket full of embriodery thread, a non-electric hand-cranked food processor. All put to use, straightaway.....

Instead of a sweater

DSC_8433
A Simply Lovely Life

Hello there everyone, this is Rosie. We've had a bug making it's way through several in the family and today my mom's the one not feeling well. So, we've sent her off to bed for a nice long rest and relax in hopes that she'll feel much better, soon. So, here I am.

My Mom mentioned that she has had several ladies write and ask about the shawls that we've knitted, so I thought that today would be a good day to share the pattern with you.

It's actually very simple, all you'll need is:

About three skeins of worsted weight wool ( amount will vary a bit depending on how large you'll want your shawl to be)

Size 7 knitting needles (if you begin and decide you'd like your tension a bit tighter, just start over--no big deal, and go down a needle size, and vice-versa, if a bit looser, up a size.)

And here is what you do:

Cast on three stiches.

Then you knit two, yarn over, and then knit to the end.

You just keep on knitting in this same simple pattern, until your shawl is as large as you would like it to be. I believe mine is about 56 in. from tip to tip, across the top, though you could just keep right on going and make yours as nice and big, cosy and warm, as you'd like. I like mine on the shorter side, that way, I can pin it on with a lovely shawl pin, and go about cleaning ,washing dishes, preparing food, hanging out the laundry, sewing, knitting, etc...... And it doesn't get in the way.

Now, once you've reach your perfectly-just-right-for-you, desired length, you can cast off and weave in the ends.

And, that's it. You're all done.

Below are some photos of mine so you can see what they look like and get better idea of the size, and plan for yours accordingly.

Please excuse the fact that they're a bit on the wrinkly side, as you keep in mind that they've been folded up all summer, anxiously awaiting the cold weather's return.

I also got some photos that I thought you might enjoy, of one of the Puddle Ducks taking a nice cool dip, on this warm summer's day.

I hope each one of you had a wonderful day. My mom sends a loving hello, from the infirmary. She also asked me to say, that she can't thank you enough for your loving prayers and thoughts, for George and Kathy and their family. I'd like to thank you, too.

Warmly, Rosie

P.S. And, a big thank-you to Joseph, for the great photos of the shawls.

Dear Rosie and Joseph...

What a wonderful post you put together. (Even if I don't know how to knit.)

I pray for all of you as this mama has been under the weather and I know how it can be.

I pray your entire family is feeling better soon. :)

Those shawls are lovely in every possible way!
I'll say a prayer that your dear mother gets well soon - I enjoy reading her daily posts. Unfortunately this is the first time I've gotten a chance to sit down and comment.

God bless you and yours!

My dear Jewels, please get to feeling better soon! We just can't have you ill - although it was nice to have a "visit" with your lovely daughter!

Your pics are always so great...I'm planning a blog entry about you soon. Are your ears burning yet? ;-)

Oh Rosie dear.....This is Grandma and I think you did a marvelous job....The shawls are beautiful and the pictures of the puddle ducks are so cute. Tell Mom that Grandpa & I hope she gets to feeling better SOON......I think your writing has a little of your Mom's flavor.....and the photos also....Love, Grandma

What a wonderful post Rosie..I'll have to try the shawl, I'm still learning to knit...but I think I could handle that...since you've blogged here, you simply must get your own blog...
Joseph, wonderful photos of your sister and her beautiful shawls.
cheers,
~Naomi Michelle~

Thanks for the directions, Rosie. I only know how to knit washcloths but that pattern sounds the same - just without the decreasing. I may give it a try!
Prayers and blessings for your mom.

Hi Rosie, I have made little doll shawls just like that, my mum showed me how many years ago. They look very snuggly and warm.

We used to have ducks and they were great fun waddling around the garden and making little ponds in the grass wherever I left the sprinkler for too long. They always slept under the lemon tree and we had the best, biggest lemons. They were dreadful mothers though and our dear grey hen always hatched their eggs for them and looked after the babies until they were old enough to realise that they were ducks.

I hope your mum feels better soon. Don't let her get up before she is really well.
Take care, Jenny

Hi, Rosie! So kind of you to fill in for your beloved mum! You knew how much we would all miss her so! You did a beautiful job with the shawsl and I like the idea of making them smaller so as to not get in the way of regular past times... I shall have to try one myself!
Thank you for posting the picture of the duck! He's too cute! And smart for taking a dip!
And thanks to Joseph to for taking such lovely pictures of you and your shawls.
All my love and best wishes for a quick recovery to your dearest mother... hugs to all!
xo

thanks for sharing the shawls and tell Joseph the photos are perfect. Tell your mom she and George and Kathy are in my prayers.

Oh my, I forgot to mention that Joseph's photos of Rosie with shawls were very good also..... Good job taking Mom's place....Love, Grandma

Thank you for posting, Rosie! I am praying with you for your sweet mom to feel much better very soon. Love to you, Q

Dear Rosie, what a terrific job you did! You certainly have a flair for writing. I have been knitting for awhile but I have not tried the shawls. I have made shrugs instead. Thank you for sharing. I pray your mother feels better. Blessings, Maria S.

Dear Rosie,
Thank you so much for keep it going... I will keep your mum in my prayers for sure... the picture of her smilie face is all I can see... please send my love to her.
I absolutely LOVE the simplicity of your shawls... reminds me of Tashas own shawls- Beautiful!>grin<
Your pictures are lovely too!
Have a lovely evening,
warmest hugs,
Pat

Oh my goodness, Rosie. I bet in real life, you talk and express just the same as your sweet mama! What a doll you are. Please send her my wishes for a speedy recovery. Many prayers for George and Kathy too.

Hello Rosie,
?Please tell your mom that I am praying for her and the family to all get better soon.
It was so sweet of you and Joseph to create a blog entry for your mom. The shawls are very pretty.
Also the puddle duck..so cute. I have a pair of pet Pekings here and they are such a joy to watch.
Give your sweet mama a hug for me and tell her to get better soon.
~Tina

Thanks, Rosie, for filling in for your mother. Please tell her that we miss her and are praying for her quick recovery from her illness. And thanks to Joseph for the photos of the lovely shawls (and beautiful Rose).
Love,
Lisa

Rosie, this is really beautiful. I am trying to teach myself to knit... it is a bit of a slow-go, but I am learning. I have a knit dish cloth that is probably the best dish cloth I have ever used and I want to learn so I can make some for others and for myself! :) I will try this out when I get my nerve up to try my hand at knitting again... I have several questions about knitting but no one I know, knows how so it makes it difficult to muddle through! Beautiful photos and I hope everyone feels better soon!!
Love to all,
Chas

Dearest Rosie,
Your shawls are beautiful! Do you crochet? I would love to see some of those items if you do. Tell your dear Mamma to rest and take care. We have also had a bug out here in the west on our little homestead. Prayers for George and Kathy will be on my lips tonight.
Sleep well all,
Shan

Praying that your mom and everyone else in the family are feeling better very quickly.
The shawls are lovely. Makes me wish I could knit.:-)

Rosie! Thanks so much for sharing the pattern for the shawl! I am so excited I am going to make one for each of my daughters and myself and then maybe some for gifts. Thanks for the pin link too.
Joseph-your photos are great! You have your Mom's eye for sure!
Jewels-I pray you get well soon! Blessings.

Dear Ones, We just want you to know that your blog is a high point around here and uncle Scott likes pictures and
some are really good.We hope Aunt Jewels feels better.

Thank you Rosie: Glad you stepped right up to the 'bat' for your Mom. (((Praying for you Jewels)))
The shawls are wonderful. I made one--from Tasha Tudor's book--without a pattern, just like you say, Rosie. I've made quite a few since. My grandmother used to wear this kind of shawls, but hers were long in the hypotenuse so she could cross it in the front, bring the 'tails' to the back, cross them and bring them to the front again. She would put her apron on top of the shawl.
Thanx for sharing the pattern. I can attest to their practicallity and warmth--especially if they are made of wool.
(I'll have to figure how to make the hypotenuse of the triangle longer, when I do I'll share it with you)
In His hands ^__^

Rosie, You are such a sweet one to report on here for your mama! I pray she is having a good night's rest, and will wake up to a bright and beautiful morning, with no lingering illness. My poor little guy was sick yesterday with a nasty "bug". He is doing very well today.
I loved the shawls, they are so lovely! I really need to learn to knit, as my Mary is wanting to learn also. You make it sound so easy!
My children always enjoy pictures of your animals.
Thank you so much for updating your mama's blog this evening, and please tell her she is in my prayers.

I really enjoy the pictures of the duck. I just love waterfowl.

Hi Rosie,

So glad that you could fill in for your mama today, thank you. I am very interested in learning to knit. Actually, as a young teen, my own mother, who was very talented in creating many beautiful things, helped me to make my first (and last) sweater, which I wore for a good number of years. My mother passed away at a young age - I am so thankful for her teachings, but I never did master knitting. I have seen so many beautiful knitted projects that inspire me to learn again. When we are back in the states next summer, for a visit, I will definitely pick up some yarn and needles (it is difficult to get those things here), and try teaching myself, I think that I can do it, especially with all the website tutorials available. I love your shawls and what a beautiful touch the shawl pin gives to the shawl, just lovely.

My eight year old son is just enthralled with George and Kathy's tree house, he keeps asking if he can get their phone number so that George can build him one (small problem, no yard, no tree we live in a highrise condo). I thought his innocent request, too cute.

George and Kathy will be in my prayers and I will be sure to add them to our prayer request list at church so that we can corporately lift their needs up to our heavenly father.

Say hello to your sweet mama for me. You are all so kind to think of her and get her into bed where she can get some rest and hopefully, recuperate quickly. I missed her today, but was so glad to have visited with you, I think that you are so pretty and I enjoy seeing all the lovely things that you make. Oh, and hooray for Joseph - great photos! God Bless you all...

Goodnite, Colleen
